I think it's extremely important to have

I think it's extremely important to have a really knowledge person to teach MDX. It's very hard to self teach MDX. I think it's equally hard to "teach" MDX. That is reflected in the scarcity of MDX books we have. Fast Track is a great one for beginners. But unfortunately it's awfully outdated. MDX solutions is another book. Technically it's a great book but pedagogically it's a horrible one. It's a myth, because nobody has clearly defined those concepts. What's the definition of member in MDX? I come up with this understanding: conceptually, a member is a dot you can put on the dimension axes. Anything you can put on the dimension axes is a member. You can't put neither hierarchy nor level on the dimension axes. Members going from the top level 0 to the lowest level (we call leaf level) give you finer and finer granularity, increasingly more detailed division of the total than the member a level above. I don't think a super smart person can be a great teacher in general because he is too smart to see what's bothering an average learner. MDX should not be a rocket science. Right now, you probably cannot find more than 500 people in the world who really can write MDX proficiently. So how to bring MDX to the masses is an urgent job for BI educators.
