Creating Local Cube or Offline Cube from SSAS 2008
Suppose we have a cube in ssas 2008 named GSK_Cube. In the Cube Structure tab of BIDS, we see the measures and dimensions associated with this cube. The Figure below shows the dimensions and measures in the cube. Now we need to create a local cube or offline cube so that we can deliver it to the users. Excel pivot table is a very common olap cube browser for users. And often users like to have offline cube or local cube so that they don’t need to go for the hassle in connecting the cube from server. Here we will see how to create a local cube using query from the Management studio. We can create local cube in several ways. From excel also, we can create local cube file. But for larger cubes, excel takes a long time and often gets stuck when creating local/offline cube. In my case, I have 6-7 million data in fact tables and several many-many dimensions. So I prefer creating the local cube using query.
